Steuben County Jail
The Steuben County Jail was constructed in 1992. The facility was originally designed to hold up to 130 inmates but has since been modified to house 178 inmates. The Jail staff includes 29 full-time confinement officers and maintains part-time officers to assist in staffing requirements. All full-time officers are required to complete a one-week Jail Academy accredited by the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy.
Services Provided
Inmate Mail
Mail is encouraged as a way to stay connected to and receive support from family during incarceration. There are rules and restrictions on what can and cannot be accepted. Please review the Jail’s policy on mail before sending anything to an inmate.
Commissary & Inmate Accounts
Commissary is available to inmates once each week. Inmates may purchase items from the commissary store using their cash account. Money may be sent to an inmate online, over the phone, or in the kiosk located in the Jail’s lobby.
Visitations
The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office has deployed a video visitation platform in the jail. Visitors will be able to set up an on-site visit (2 per week) or a remote visit (unlimited). The on-site visits will be conducted in the lobby of the Steuben County Jail where the video terminals are provided. Remote visits can be conducted off-site by using any smartphone device or laptop computer for a flat fee of $4.00 for a 20-minute visit.
Chirp/Tablet Time
Chirps are $0.10 per outgoing and incoming text. Text messages are limited to 160 characters. Tablet time is $0.05 per minute to view movies and/or listen to music. Phone calls can also be made from the tablet for $0.25 per minute.
Medical Care
The Steuben County Jail provides arrangements for routine health care, as well as twenty-four (24) hour emergency medical, dental and psychological care, to inmates through the services of Quality Correctional Care. The jail nurse screens medical/dental and mental health requests from inmates, consults with the physician, and then advises the jail staff on what medical, mental, and dental health services need to be provided. Both the doctor and the nursing staff are contracted through Quality Correctional Care.
Religious Services
Religious services are offered to inmates throughout the week through the Steuben County Jail Ministry volunteer team. Bible study, church services, and one-on-one clergy visits are scheduled on various days throughout the week. Volunteers are required to submit an application and undergo a background check before they are approved to volunteer through the Jail Ministry. In addition, training is offered and required throughout the year to enhance each volunteer’s understanding of serving the incarcerated.
Educational Program
Inmates who have not yet received their high school diploma, or equivalency of a HS diploma, may request to participate in educational services provided in the Steuben County Jail. The Educational Services Program is currently made possible through collaborative efforts of the Steuben County United Way, Steuben County Literacy Coalition, and the Impact Institute. Volunteer tutors are subject to a background check and training in order to provide these services to inmates. The Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC) exam may be offered to inmates once they are pre-screened and prepared by the tutors. Inmates are responsible for the cost of the exam.
