Sheriff’s Honor Guard
Mission Statement:
The primary mission of the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard is to represent the County of Steuben, and the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, at all functions directed by the Sheriff or his designee. The primary mission responsibility of the unit is to conduct honor ceremonies at funerals for the Steuben County Sheriff’s Deputies who are killed in the line-of-duty.
The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office Ceremonial Honor Guard is a unit, consisting of Sworn Deputies and civilian staff from various elements within the Office. Overall command of the unit is held by the Sheriff. The unit is under the direct control of the Honor Guard Commander.
The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office Ceremonial Honor Guard Unit is a representation of the best deputies within the Office. In many instances, it is the unit most visible to other law enforcement agencies and the general public. Indirectly, it is a valuable recruiting asset for the Office.
The unit’s members are hand selected from the Office’s rank and file. Consideration’s for selection to the Honor Guard are qualities like: prior experience, professional image, uniform appearance, personal grooming standards, motivation, stature, and bearing interest in Honor Guard activities, work record/ethic, and positive attitude.
Deputies selected to the team commit to several years of service and are expected to set the example for other Deputies within the agency in all aspects of their work and personal conduct. In accordance with the Rules and Regulations, the Ceremonial Honor Guard carries with it the “honor” of the Office, therefore team members are likewise held to a higher standard.
